BMW G80 M3 Competition Gloss Black Rim Refinish

This special edition BMW G80 M3 Competition came in straight off the floor.

The owner liked the factory setup but wanted to shift the look without changing the wheels.

The goal was simple. Keep the OEM rims, refinish them properly in gloss black, and tie in a few matching accents across the car.

What We Did:

We started by removing all four rims from the car. On a wheel like the G80 M3, this is where the job actually begins.

These are tight multi-spoke rims, which means access is limited and every surface matters.

Preparation was the key stage here. We didn’t rush it.

The rims went through a full prep process using a combination of machine sanding and detailed hand sanding.

The machine work handled the broader surfaces, while the hand sanding allowed us to get deep into the inner sections of each spoke where tools can’t properly reach.

This step is what determines whether the paint holds or fails later.

Once the surface was fully prepped and cleaned, we moved into primer/adhesion coats.

With a wheel like this, you are working with complex geometry.

You can’t just spray the face and expect a consistent finish. Every angle has to be worked deliberately.

The painting process is where experience actually shows.

Tight multi-spoke wheels create a common problem.

If you focus too much on the visible face, you overload those areas with paint.

That creates high spots and uneven thickness. At the same time, the inner sections end up under-covered.

To avoid that, the approach needs to be controlled and methodical.

We worked the paint through the spokes first, building proper coverage inside the structure of the wheel, then balanced it across the outer face.

The goal was full, even gloss black coverage across every surface without heavy build-up or the need for rework.

Once the rims were completed and cured, we refitted them to the vehicle.

Alongside that, we also refinished a few smaller exterior accents in gloss black to tie the look together.

Why It Matters:

Refinishing OEM wheels properly is not just about colour. It is about maintaining the integrity of the finish over time.

Poor prep leads to peeling. Poor paint technique leads to uneven gloss, weak coverage, and visible defects under light.

On a car like the G80 M3, those issues stand out immediately.

Done correctly, the result looks factory.

The gloss is consistent, the coverage is even, and the finish holds up to real use.

You keep the original wheel quality while upgrading the visual impact.

Key Takeaways:

• Multi-spoke rims require significantly more prep time than standard wheels

• Proper coverage inside the spokes is just as important as the outer face

• Overloading paint on the face creates high spots and ruins the finish

• A mix of machine and hand sanding is required for proper adhesion

• OEM wheel refinishing done right should look factory, not aftermarket

This G80 M3 kept its factory identity but gained a sharper, more aggressive finish.

Clean, consistent gloss black done properly makes the difference. That is the level of work we focus on in Phuket.
